Stevens Announces Grand Opening of New Corporate Headquarters

MADISON, WIS. (December 21, 2012) - Stevens Construction Corp., a full-service, Wisconsin-based general contractor, just celebrated the official grand opening of their new 15,000 square foot corporate headquarters in Madison, WI. On December 13th, close to 300 clients, subcontractors, vendors, and employees turned out to celebrate Stevens' new home. The event took place from 4-7 p.m. and included an open house featuring refreshments and hors d'oeuvres.

The new building is located in the American Center at Two Buttonwood Court, Madison, WI and is just a few blocks from its previous headquarters. The headquarters include 35 offices, expanded meeting and conference spaces, a training facility and other corporate support functions.

Kahler Slater, an award-winning architecture and experience design firm, provided architecture and interior design services. "As a construction company, they were able to incorporate some very unique elements that emphasize the brand image that Stevens Construction has created for itself," said Designer Amber MacCracken.

Stevens Construction does all of its own concrete and carpentry work, and the public spaces inside the building showcase that craftsmanship. The Douglas-fir reception desk, board room table and paneling inside and outside of the board room were all custom built by Stevens Construction's carpenters.

The building is set upon a concrete plinth of post tensioned concrete. On all sides, the building cantilevers out from the foundation wall-most dramatically at the front of the building, where the board room and other conference rooms are located. "You typically don't see this type of construction on a project of this scale, but Stevens Construction wanted to highlight their expertise in this type of work and it gave us the design flexibility to do some dramatic things," said Glenn Roby, team leader for Kahler Slater's Business Environments Team.

The 20-space underground parking structure not only allowed Stevens to create additional green space surrounding the building, but is also a working example of the post-tension concrete work the firm regularly performs for its clients.

"The design of our new office is a reflection of our company," said Geoffrey Vine, President of Stevens Construction. "It is efficient and straight forward. Although not overly adorned, it is sophisticated and executed at the highest level of quality. This will be a great environment for us to grow in and improve on how we serve our clients in 2013 and well into the future."

The opening of Stevens' new corporate office wraps up an exciting 2012 for the company, as they also celebrated their 60th anniversary this year. Stevens has a pipeline of new projects that will contribute to their growth and momentum into the New Year.

Madison's Largest Urban Mixed use Apartment Project on Schedule

Developed by the Mullins Group, 2550University commenced construction in May of 2011 and is slated for completion July 1, 2012. The mixed use apartment complex is located in the Regent Neighborhood and will consist of 130 apartments, lofts and townhomes designed for those looking for an urban rental lifestyle in a building with condominium quality finishes. The complex will also include below grade parking and 4 unique commercial spaces in a variety of sizes ranging from 1400 to 3500 Square feet.

"While the majority of new multifamily being developed in downtown Madison is oriented towards a student population 2550University is also meant to offer the underserved population of professionals and empty nesters a quality lifestyle in an urban neighborhood close to public transportation, a major medical center, shopping and restaurants," says Brad Mullins, one of the project owners.

The developer of the project gave Stevens Construction an ambitious 14 month construction timeline to complete the project so that apartments would be available to prospective tenants by the summer of 2012. A combination of excellent field capabilities and relentless preconstruction efforts gave Stevens the confidence to accept this completion timeframe for the over 200,000 square foot project on a very tight urban site. "Producing this concrete frame so quickly is a good example of how we control schedule through our self-performed work," said Glenn Hofer, Project Executive for Stevens Construction "It's a competitive advantage."

2550University was designed by Eppstein Uhen Architects also out of Madison. Steve Holzhauer, Managing Principal at Eppstein and Lead Project Architect commented: "The Stevens team has been persistent and deliberate in maintaining schedule and quality on a complicated site through winter conditions."

2550University Avenue will be open by July 1, 2012 and will offer convenient access to downtown amenities, and services. For more details and leasing information please visit their website at www.2550university.com .

Last Minute Donation Provides Thanksgiving Relief

MADISON, WIS. (Nov 17, 2011) -One of Wisconsin's largest General Contractors and leading concrete contractor, Stevens Construction Corp., will be making a sizeable donation to the, Madison-based, Goodman Community Center's Thanksgiving Basket food drive. Just a few weeks ago the community center announced that they were still in need of turkeys and several other traditional Thanksgiving foods in order to help feed many of the area's impacted families this year.

As a part of their civic duty Stevens has decided to step up in a number of ways in order to help relieve the areas of need for the Thanksgiving Basket Event. Civic minded companies such as Stevens feel the obligation to be socially responsible and that is why they have made the efforts to help with the Community Center's Holiday event. "We have experienced remarkable successes this year that have inspired us to feel strongly about being able to give back to the community. We are happy to help and know that fewer families will go without this holiday season," said Mark A. Rudnicki, CEO of Stevens Construction Corp.

Along with their monetary donations the company has offered several hours of volunteer efforts and have also held a mini-food drive at their office headquarters in order to help provide a few of the supplies that are still necessary to complete the Thanksgiving Dinners. As a result of the combined efforts, the event will provide about 1000 families with a Thanksgiving meal.

Construction on Goodwill Project Begins

MADISON, WIS. (Oct 25, 2011) - After several months of planning, Stevens Construction Corp. is excited to announce that construction has begun on the site for the future Goodwill-supported Sandra Hall Apartment Building.

Earlier this year the City of Madison purchased the jobsite land from the current owner on behalf of the Goodwill Industries. The rest of the construction costs will be covered by a grant from the U.S. Department of Urban Development (HUD).

Construction on the single-level building began earlier this month and is scheduled to be completed in the spring of next year. Located on Madison's East side with easy access to the city bus system, the project, once completed, will offer seven one bedroom units available for rent by individuals with chronic mental illnesses. This project will be the eighth Goodwill-supported apartment building in the area and will bring the total number of rental units available for eligible tenants to 74!.

The building is being named after former Goodwill employee, Sandra Hall. During her 13 year tenure with the Goodwill Industries, Sandra, was instrumental in developing housing and employment support programs for those in need.. Sandra currently still remains involved with the organization through serving on their affiliate board.

This particular program is one of the few within the Goodwill movement that provides housing. The idea to begin providing housing was developed by members of the program back in the 1970's, shortly after health officials decided to begin moving individuals with mental illnesses out of institutions. The concern for those individuals was that there would be no safe or affordable place for them to go.

So, in partnership with HUD, Goodwill was able to get a federal subsidiary which enables eligible tenants to rent a one bedroom unit from the Goodwill Industries for only a third of their overall income. Not only do these apartments provide a safe and affordable environment for residents to call home, but they also offer a community of resources to help residents learn the skills necessary to successfully live on their own.

"Stevens is excited and proud to partner with Goodwill Industries on such a project that will ultimately benefit members of the communities in which we live and work," commented Mark A. Rudnicki, CEO of Stevens Construction Corp.

CONSTRUCTION TO BEGIN ON THE AREA'S EIGHT GOODWILL-SUPPORTED APARTMENT BUILDING

River Bluff Townhomes Project Completed

The project initially presented several obstacles for the Developer, but after a concerted effort in the design and approvals phase, the project moved ahead. Stevens Construction Corp. and its construction team were able to ultimately deliver a project within budget, on time, and with a level of quality that exceeded expectations.

The Developer envisioned the construction of 36 rental apartments within 9 townhouse-style buildings. There are two primary design themes, one traditional and the other more contemporary in style. Five of the buildings fronting Wisconsin Street have pitched roofs with lap siding and walk up front entries. The remaining four buildings adjacent to the Eisenbahn Trail have flat roofs with flat panel siding materials. Interjecting multiple color schemes resulted in a bold and tasteful finish and maintains a cohesive look throughout the entire development.

Due to a long history of various industrial uses of the site, there was significant soil contamination, requiring special handling and hauling off of material. Special underground venting systems were installed under the building slabs to vent subsurface vapors out of the buildings. All landscaped areas required a new layer of topsoil to cap the remaining contaminated soils. Erosion control needed to be tightly monitored due to proximity to the river. Significant coordination, oversight, and reporting were required for all these activities. This was an immense task that required constant vigilance.

Construction began in late October of 2010. Starting in the fall meant that a majority of the construction was going to be completed in the middle of the blustery Wisconsin winter. Stevens' crews poured the concrete foundations and slabs through very challenging winter conditions. The buildings were also all framed in the dead of winter. With multiple buildings on a tight site, building exterior finishing, and lots of site work, all in a short window of time, made tracking the project essential.

The project had a phased completion, with Phase l finishing for July 1, 2011 occupancy and Phase ll finishing for September 1, 2011 occupancy. Unit interiors and exterior work all needed to be complete and ready for resident occupancy, which was achieved prior to the required dates. The residents living in the complex now enjoy modern amenities such as spacious floor plans, attached garages, in-home laundry, a playground for children, beautiful landscaping and a convenient location.

MADISON, WIS. (Oct 3, 2011) - The River Bluff Townhomes are located in West Bend, WI next to the Eisenbahn State Trail, just a short walk from the Milwaukee River and downtown businesses.

Work Completed on Fourth Buffalo Wild Wings While Gearing Up For Their Fifth

The construction and development of this particular Buffalo Wild Wings began in May of this year and concluded earlier this month. Stevens' scheduling savvy and capability to deliver high quality products to their clients is an area in which they continually pride themselves.

"We are proud to have such a great repeat client in the ownership of the Buffalo Wild Wings. Adding value to repeat client's construction projects is what we do best and it is at the core of our business model. These are fun projects to work on, made even better by the opportunity to work with great people who are also great at what they do," commented Mark Rudnicki, CEO of Stevens Construction Corp.

As Stevens wraps up the final details of this project they will simultaneously begin focusing their efforts towards the preparations and delivery of yet another Buffalo Wild Wings. This one will be located in Milwaukee and upon completion, will mark Steven's fifth project for this owner involving the popular sports bar. Stevens' increasing involvement in projects like these is the reason they continue to excel and uphold high standards of quality within the general construction industry.

MADISON, WIS. (Sep 6, 2011) - Stevens Construction Corp., a full-service, Wisconsin-based general contractor, is excited to announce the construction completion of the Buffalo Wild Wings located on University Square in Downtown Madison.

Beating Economy. Building Big.

MADISON, WIS. (January 26, 2011) - Stevens Construction Corp. has been chosen to build a 14-story, privately-owned, student-living building on the edge of the University of Michigan campus in Ann Arbor. At 235,000 square feet with 606 beds, 173 apartments, two levels of underground parking and retail spaces on the first floor, 601 Forest will be one of the biggest buildings under construction in Michigan.

The project underwent four years of development, and with the help of Stevens, overcame a two-year stall due to economic factors that significantly reduced lending. "We have an immense amount of experience with student-living projects, but it is our expertise in post-tension concrete structures that allowed this project to come to fruition", said Geoffrey Vine, President of Stevens Construction. "Brian Wagner, our Vice President of Presconstruction, worked tirelessly with the development and ownership team for more than 18 months to develop a plan that worked financially. In the end, our competitive price for our self-performed concrete work is what made the financing for the project possible."

As a result, Stevens was awarded the project from a select group of competing General Contractors. With construction financing closed, demolition of existing structures on the site, located at South Forest Street and South University, is currently underway.

The project will require more than 300 fieldworkers a day during the peak construction schedule. 30 employees from Stevens will travel to and from the site to pour concrete for the post-tension concrete structure. The positive impact on jobs also spreads to the more than 40 other subcontractors and materials suppliers involved in the project.

Designed for the high-end market, 601 Forest includes an amenity floor featuring workout facilities, tanning beds, saunas, theatre room, game room and outside hot tub. The project is scheduled to open in the fall of 2012.

Hughes Acquisitions of Ann Arbor and Campus Acquisitions of Chicago are owners of the project. Hartshome Plunkard of Chicago is the architect.

First LEED Platinum Certified Fire Station in Madison, Second in the World

"This is a considerable achievement for the City of Madison and the Madison Fire Department. It's also a testament to the continuing success of Stevens' Green Initiative Program, which has not only mastered the process for managing LEED projects but has grown from having three LEED Accredited Professionals on staff during the construction of Fire Station No. 12 to eight more people currently in the process of being accredited," replied Mitch Gilbertson, Assistant Project Manager.

To be eligible for Platinum Certification, a project must meet or exceed an array of the most stringent compliances set by LEED. Among the most notable achieved by Stevens Construction and Fire Station No. 12 were:

A 96% total construction waste diversion from landfill by weight.
Construction of a Live Roof and rainwater harvesting system that set a precedence as one of the only commercial or industrial projects to meet the requirements of the Wisconsin Department of Commerce.
Implementation of a geothermal exchange system which significantly reduces dependence on natural gas and electricity.
In addition, by ensuring the project used 31% total recycled content for building materials and 52% total regional building materials, Stevens Construction helped Fire Station No. 12 exceed the exemplary performance requirements for Platinum Certification.

"We are strategically procuring and executing LEED projects that meet the highest standards," says Geoff Vine, President of Stevens Construction. "While most general contractors talk of their green building capability, Stevens continues to offer real experience building green."

Fire Station 12 encompasses a total of 13,535 square feet (12,445 square feet on the first floor with a 1,090 square foot mezzanine). Fire Station No. 12 joins Fire Station No. 2 in Scottsdale, Arizona as the only LEED Platinum fire stations in the world.

Others sharing in this achievement with Stevens Construction include: Plunkett Rayisch Architects, Jenkins Survey and Design, Pierce Engineering, Strand Associates, Sustainable Engineering Group, the Madison Fire Department and the City of Madison.

MADISON, WIS. (January 21, 2010) - Stevens Construction Corp., in concert with the design and engineering team, recently obtained the highest green-build accreditation for the construction of Madison's newest fire station, Fire Station No. 12. In achieving LEED Platinum Certification, Fire Station No. 12 becomes the first building in Madison and only the second fire station in the world to reach Platinum status.
